Johnny's 'Weird' Career
Media Blvd. offers a walk through Johnny Depp's film career in an article called Weird as a career choice. It doesn't offer alot of new information, but it's a nice recap, and the author of the article sums it up quite nicely.
At one point I said I'd watch any film starring Johnny Depp; Nick of Time cured me of that. But now that he can do whatever he wants, I may go back to that philosophy again. If Johnny Depp wants to be in a film, it's almost sure to be interesting.

Donleavy Grows Anxious
The DailyMail reports that J.P. Donleavy is "growing anxious" to see Johnny Depp make a film version of his novel, "The Ginger Man". But he fears that he may never see it happen due to his own increasing age and Johnny's other commitments:
two months into his 82nd year, the eccentric Irish-American writer J.P. Donleavy is growing anxious that his Hollywood friend Johnny Depp fulfills his pledge to turn his masterpiece, The Ginger Man, into a film.
Depp promised Donleavy that he would produce and star in a silver screen versionof his scaborous account of the exploits of student Sebastian Dangerfield. But the author fears the Pirates star has too many commitments.
From his farm in Ireland, he tells me"would dearly love to see his version of The Ginger Man before I am no longer here."
"But when I saw Mr. Depp in New York recently I made the mistake of telling him the plot of my next book, which is called The dog the 17th floor."
"He loved it and I am afraid he might make a movie out of it before The Ginger Man. If so, it wil - alas - be my own fault."

Depp Defines Manliness
FortWayne.com cites Johnny Depp as the standard of qualities considered "Manly" in today's society.
Johnny Depp, king of the wrist decor, may well be a barometer for what it means to be manly anymore. He's happy to bend the gender role freely, but what's more important - swish or swagger?
It's an interesting article about the ever-changing roles of males and females in society and the struggle of young men trying to find their indentity. In the end, though, it all comes back to Johnny:
Maybe Depp is teaching us that it's not swish or swagger, it's both.

Battle for Bragging Rights
According to the LA Times, Sony and Disney are in disagreement over which studio's film actually holds the record for opening weekend box office reports.
While Pirates raked in $404 Million in its worldwide opening over a 6-day period compared to $382 Million for SpiderMan 3, Sony argues that Disney has included figures from early previews that should not be included in the totals. Disney, of course, denies any misrepresentation and claims that even without the early preview totals, the Pirates still trounced Spidey.
Honestly, though-- with gross reports for both movies approaching half a bilion dollars each within days of their release (not to mention the millions more in the store from the upcoming DVD releases), does it really matter? Seems to me that there is plenty of bragging to go around.

Rumors on Spy Tale
Reports have been circulating for several months that Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, has secured the rights to "Sasha's Story: The life and death of a Russain Spy," a book in the works by Alan Cowell about Alexander Litvinenko., the Russain spy who died of poisoning last year. The project would be in competition with a film from director Michael Mann based on "Death of a Dissident," a book co-written Litvinenko widow, Marina.
Recently, rumors surfaced that the two projects would be combined and that Johnny Depp would star in the Mann version of the film. But according to a report from IGN, this rumor is unfounded.
IGN contacted Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, which advised us that the Guardian report is inaccurate. We were told that Depp will not star in the Mann version and, although he is not attached to star in anything yet, if he were to make a Litvinenko movie then it would be Sasha's Story. So that settles that.

Knightley Finds Depp Masterful

"This is such a relief. Not that I enjoy doing all the Pirates stuff, but it's not about my character- it's about Johnny's character. It's not focusing on emotional turmoil. It's been great just to get my brain engaged."
She also talks briefly about the appeal of working with Johnny Depp
"I love to watch Johnny work, as it's masterful. It's like taking an acting master class."
